Fedora 8 Overview

Fedora (previously called Fedora Core) is an RPM-based, general purpose Linux distribution, developed by the community-supported Fedora Project and sponsored by Red Hat. Fedora's mission statement is: "Fedora is about the rapid progress of Free and Open Source software."[1] One of Fedora's main objectives is to not only contain free and open source software, but also to be on the leading edge of such technologies.[1][2]

Fedora 8

Fedora 8 Systems Administration

Fedora 8 simply rocks.  It contains the new tickless 2.6.23 version of the kernel, the new CFS process scheduler (Completely Fair Scheduler) that put everyone in such a hussy, improved memory management, the new Pulse Audio Linux Sound System, and an ability to create different live images one of which allows you to boot from a USB drive. In terms of use, if just feels snappy, even when running Gnome (I cannot believe that I just wrote that). And it feels even more polished than Fedora 7 which I already thought was an impressive distribution based upon their ability to seamlessly merge Fedora Core and Fedora Extras into "Fedora". Oh, and their default "Infinity" background that changes color based upon the time of day is made of pure WIN. Fedora is headed in exactly the right direction, and the future looks bright. If you have thought about upgrading for a while, but have been hesitant, now is definitely the time to do so.
